Information for 2023 participants

If you got a mini-monument kit at the Construct 3D conference, use the oil-based clay to sculpt your version of a monument.

Tips for working with oil-based clay:

If the clay is hard to manipulate, warm it up by heating with a hair dryer or placing it in a microwave for 10 second intervals.

If your desired form has protruding parts that won’t support themselves, you might need to add an armature: sculpt over a rigid material like wire or wood.

Once you are happy with your monument form, it needs to be 3d scanned.

Take the acrylic dividers out of your mini-monument kit and slot them together to create a stand for your clay model.

If you have access to a 3D scanner, use it to scan your monument and save it as an .stl file. Email us your file and we’ll print it.

If you have an iphone 13 or 14, you can download a 3D scanning app like Polycam. This app has a free 3-day trial. Use the photo setting (you don’t need LIDAR, since this is a small object) and follow the directions to capture all angles of your model. Process and save the scan as an .stl file.

Then open your file in a mesh editing software like Mesh Mixer or Blender to highlight and delete any background information. Fill any holes, save and email us the edited .stl file.

If you don’t have access to a 3D scanner or a newer iphone, package your clay model carefully and mail it to us for 3D scanning. Email us for the mailing address.

Please send us either your .stl file or your clay model by September 30, 2023. Also include the following: your return mailing address, a title and brief description of your monument (500 characters or less), the name, age and location of the participant.

We will 3D print the files in castable resin, make investment molds and cast your monument in bronze. Each participant will be included in a catalog that will be sent to them along with their bronze mini-monument.
